Need to keep your boat shoes squeaky clean? We've got you covered.
Step 1: Remove laces
If your shoes have laces, first remove them before cleaning your shoes. They are often made of rawhide which means they have to be cleaned differently.
To clean genuine leather shoelaces, just pop them in a bowl with cold water and soap, swish thoroughly, and then rinse with clean water. Allow your laces to air dry for about 24 hours.
Step 2: Clean with leather care products
It's important to remember that leather should not be treated in the same way you would fabric, nubucks or suedes. Even though your Sperry shoes get wet with water we advise against washing with water. We recommend using a leather cleaner to remove any dirt and stains. That'll help to maintain the moisture leather.
Step 3. Drying
Open the shoes fully, remove the insoles and laces and let them dry at room temperature. (Never expose them to heat!).
Step 4. Conditioning
Recommended treatment depends on the construction and material of the footwear. Many treatments do slightly alter the colour and appearance of the shoes. We recommend using a leather lotion to protect your Sperry shoes from drying, cracking and scuffing.
We don't currently stock any specific cleaning products for Sperry however you can find most leather care products at your local Supermarket or Shoe Repair shops.
Extra tips on how to care for your Sperrys:
- Need to freshen up? Sprinkle non-leather insoles with baking soda to deodorise and help with general freshness. We even recommend investing in a pair of no-show socks to help keep your feet cool and stick-free!
- If they get wet, or after cleaning your leather boat shoes, allow your Sperrys to air-dry for 24 hours in a cool, dry place away from heat or sunlight.
- Stuff your boat shoes with newspaper to absorb excess moisture. It also helps to maintain its shape!
